Omed Omedan (Kissing Ceremony)

Unique tradition seems never ending happen in Bali. A day after Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu hold a kissing ceremony called Omed-omedan. It’s held once a year exactly the day after Nyepi that well known as Ngembak Geni which is in March. This is only happen in a certain area in Sesetan – Denpasar. This heritage culture happens since the year of 1900ish. The people believe that if this festival does not happen, all the bless won’t be able to come and bad things will happen.

Once in 1970ish, this festival was not been held and then suddenly there were 2 pigs fighting in front of the village temple bleeding all over their bodies and then they were just dissapear. This was considered as a bad sign by the people in that area. Since then, they decided to held the Omed Omedan every year. The meaning of this festival is a girl and a boy from this area are kissing randomly.

The history of this festival is when the king of Puri Oka was sick while some youngsters playing Omed Omedan in front of the puri (puri= the house of the king). Some boys pull a random boy in one side and in the other side some girls pull one random girl. They pull these two so they get kissed each other. This event caused noisy voice that made the king became so angry. He came our from the puri and was going to stop this stupid game, but once he arrived outside, he did not feel sick anymore and became in a very healthy condition.

Since then, the King announce to the people that this Omed Omedan should be held every year (the day after nyepi).
