Aside from the toll road connecting Benoa, Ngurah Rai International
Airport and Nusa Dua, as well as underpass at the Dewa Ruci
intersection, Bali will see other road projects completed before the
island hosts the APEC Summit in October.
The Public Works
Ministry is to build a new road connecting Jl. Mahendradatta and Jl.
Sunset Road to ease the traffic gridlock in the surrounding areas. The
construction of the 1.2-kilometer road was targeted to start by the end
of next month, said Juni Wahyudiono, the ministry’s official who is
leading the project.
“The bidding is still underway. We expect to
get the company [winning the bid] soon, followed by the signing of the
work contract, we will start working around the end of March,” Juni told
The road to be constructed is the continuation of
the West Ring Road project (WRR) that ended on Jl. Mahendradatta. The
project was halted several years ago due to problems with land
“We aim to continue the WRR project. So far, we have
acquired land along 300 meters of the Sunset Road area, and are still
in the process of acquiring the rest of the land needed to build the
road,” Juni explained, adding that the ministry and the Denpasar
municipality were still working on the acquisition of the remaining
The new road is expected to break the gridlock around Jl. Imam Bonjol, as it will provide a new alternative route. It is also expected to ease traffic at the end of the Dewa Ruci underpass heading to Jl. Sunset Road.
road improvement will take place at the Uluwatu intersection leading to
the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) cultural park in Jimbaran.
The improvement of the three-kilometer route will be carried out simultaneously with the Sunset Road-Mahendradatta project.
to Juni, the ministry’s task force for road improvement was also
working on other projects to improve road safety, including on Jl.
Bypass Ngurah Rai in Pesanggaran heading to Sanur, as well as in Nusa
Dua and along Jl. Raya Kuta.
“Our target is to complete all these
projects by August. These are part of the infrastructure preparation
for the APEC Summit,” he said.
There are two major infrastructure
projects currently taking place in the southern part of the island,
both of which are targeted for completion before the summit:
Construction of the underpass at the Dewa Ruci intersection and an
elevated toll-road built over the sea to connect Benoa with Ngurah Rai
airport and Nusa Dua.
Hendro Satrio, project leader for the Dewa Ruci underpass, said completion of the project now had reached around 85 percent.
said the two projects (the underpass and the toll-road) would not be
enough to solve the traffic problems in southern Bali. Therefore, the
ministry was set to carry out other projects within the next few years.
congestion not only occurs around Kuta and on the way to Nusa Dua, but
also in some other areas, including around Jl. Imam Bonjol and the
